ABOUT THE TRACK
The oldest continuously running track in operation on the DIRTcar Racing NorthEast circuit, Orange County operates every Saturday night with Big-Block Modified, Sportsman Modified, UMP Pro Stock and Pure Stock classes on the regular weekly card with 358-Modified contests scheduled frequently throughout the summer months. The speedway currently hosts a special stop by the nationally acclaimed World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series while the 2008 campaign concludes in October with the 47th Annual Eastern States 200 for DIRTcar Modifieds. OCFS initially joined the DIRT-fold in 1983 and that same year began holding time trials during Eastern States Weekend, although use of the AMB i.t. scoring and timing system was first introduced in the 2000 Advance Series show staged in August. Brett Hearn established the modern-day DIRTcar Modified record touring the fast 5/8-miler in a time of 21.345 sec. (105.411 mph) on Oct. 26, 2003 and the Sussex, N.J. standout is the all-time Orange County points champion and feature winner in both Big-Block and Small-Block divisions.

TRACK HISTORY
Orange County Fair Speedway boasts one of the greatest racing heritages in all of motorsports, including a winner’s list that is headed by modern-day superstar Brett Hearn and bolstered by many of the best drivers ever to compete on the Northeastern Modified circuit. The original Middletown tract was built for horse racing in 1857 and called “The Harry Clay Oval” after a famous horse named Harry Clay. Joe Coates from nearby Goshen, N.Y. rebuilt the track in 1924, taking clay from Finan’s Pond and when it hardened was unequaled by any other in the area; the surface became extremely hard yet soft enough not to injure the hooves of horses. Initially laid out as half-mile, the track was both widened and lengthened over the years to its present day 5/8-mile size and the present grandstand structure was built in 1925. This year marks the 168th Annual Orange County Fair.

Auto racing enthusiast George Martin was appointed as Orange County Fair Society Director in 1909 and his motion in 1913 to bring cars on the last day of the fair in place of horses was finally approved by the Fairboard six years later. An overflow crowd of 5,000 curious spectators came out to the track on August 15, 1919 to witness Jim Benedict best nine other entries to claim the inaugural 10-lap AAA-sanctioned race which paid $75.00 the winner. Annual fair races continued to prosper on the ‘Hard Clay’ and 1941 marked the first time two events were held. Following the end of WWII the name was changed to Victory Speedway and in 1946 it was announced by track promoter Russ Carpenter that ARDC Midgets would race each Wednesday night. While pictures substantiate that stock cars first circled the inner 1/5-mile track one year prior, a new era in track history began when the first official race was run off on Sept. 18, 1948 and won by Rocky Dinatale from Trenton, N.J. June 7, 1952 marked the first race under the lights in Middletown. That same year was the first for ‘flatheads’ which evolved into Sportsman stock cars, then 320-Modifieds and became the DIRTcar 358-Modifieds that compete today. Frankie Schneider won the inaugural Eastern States 100 Championship on October 28, 1962 and the Northeast’s premier short-track event was lengthened to 200 laps in 1968 under the promotion of Orange County Agricultural Society President Al Howard, who also changed the name to Orange County Fair Speedway.

Taking over the duties of Race Director at the beginning of the 1981 season was Stan Gurda, brother of majority fairgrounds owner Michael Gurda. Two years later DIRT MotorSports secured the promotion of speedway racing events under the guidance of president Glenn Donnelly. From 1983 through 2004, Orange County remained a cornerstone of DIRTcar Racing in Eastern New York, and after a one-year absence re-joined the DIRT-fold in ‘06. Under the DIRTcar regime, Hearn has brought further notoriety to the historic oval situated about an hour from New York City, capturing 13 Big-Block Modified season point titles and racking up nearly 140 feature wins in the past 25 seasons. Joining Hearn at the top of Orange County’s all-time Modified win list are legendary open-wheel pilots and Northeast Hall of Famers Frankie Schneider (58), Will Cagle (47), Buzzie Reutimann (34), Rags Carter (33) and Bobby Bottcher (26). Contending today are front running point leaders David VanHorn, Chuck McKee, Jerry Higbie, rookie Mike Storms and 2007 Eastern States 200 champion Jeff Heotzler.

2007 RACE REVIEW
Front row is the best place to start when the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series comes to Middletown for the annual tour stop at Orange County Fair Speedway. DIRTcar Big-Block Modified veteran Frank Cozze from Wind Gap. Pennsylvania proved it for the second straight year as he led flag-to-flag to capture the Cedar Ridge RV Center 75 in convincing fashion. Cozze won the first qualifying heat, drew the pole then proceeded to hold off runner-up Matt Sheppard for the entire 75-lap distance around the legendary ‘Hard Clay’ oval to mirror the 2006 performance staged by Billy Decker who led all 100 laps to collect the $6,000 top prize and guaranteed starting spot in the headline Rite Aid 200 during Super DIRT Week. Sheppard settled for second-place with Steve Paine, Integra Shocks Fast Timer Decker and Mike Ricci filling out the front-five. Cozze’s seventh career Advance Series triumph was his fourth at Orange County, including back-to-back victories (1989-90) in the prestigious Eastern States 200. In the fast-paced feature that took just over 30 minutes to run and averaged 91.545 mph, only two brief caution periods during the final 15 laps put Cozze’s victory lane speech on hold. Both yellow flags unfurled due to flat tires, the first falling on lap 61 for Rick Laubach’s blown right rear and the second on lap 66 when tour regular Jimmy Phelps lost tire pressure. When the checkered flag finally waved, Cozze had opened up a half-dozen car-length advantage over Sheppard with nearly another full second separating the leaders from third-place runner Paine. All-time Orange County champion Brett Hearn was not a factor during the night yet still made up the most ground near the front of the pack, finishing eighth after starting 12th despite winning the second of six qualifying heats and setting second-fast time.

NEWS & NOTES
Mr. DIRTcar Championship Format Fine Tuned In ‘08
: The overall Hoosier Tire Mr. DIRTcar Modified Champion in 2008 will be determined by adding actual points earned in the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series along with bonus points collected at a designated hometrack throughout the racing season. Along with gaining valuable Advance Series points during the year, each driver can now earn a maximum of 300 additional points from their best five hometrack feature race finishes. Using the standard DIRTcar NE weekly points format, a driver winning five features could carry up to 300 extra points (60 per win) into the Mr. DIRTcar Championship when track points are officially tallied after Labor Day.

The Hard Clay Is Home For Hearn: When you come into his ‘home’ for a big mid-week event, expect all-time Orange County Fair Speedway champion Brett Hearn to be on top of his game. Hearn ranks as one of the best-ever short-track racers in the nation and with an Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series show in town, the Sussex, New Jersey ace will be banking on four decades of experience on the ‘Hard Clay’ to claim bragging rights. The ‘Corporate Jet’ has already scored three feature wins in just five attempts this year at OCFS and a fourth triumph on Thursday would be his biggest by far as it would mark Advance Auto Parts Series career win no. 100 for the five-time overall Hoosier Tire Mr. DIRTcar Modified Champion. Making his motorsports debut at the Middletown oval in 1975, Hearn has since amassed 15 Orange County Big-Block points championships and added his eighth 358-Modified title at OCFS in 2007. His grand total has reached 289 open-wheel (169 big-block Modified, 118 small-block, 2 sprint) feature wins at the Wisner Avenue location with 11 of his 745 career feature wins tallied in 2008.

Summertime Winners: With the recent Advance Auto Parts Series ‘Summer Swing’ including stops at Grandview and Georgetown, 19 tracks have now hosted DIRTcar Big-Block Modified races in 2008 with 46 drivers scoring victories in the 98 features run. Billy Decker has steered the potent LJL Racing Bicknell machine into victory lane a division-high total of 16 times to double the season output of popular Pennsylvanian Brian Swartzlander. Fellow Keystone State pilot Kevin Bolland and Advance Series stars Brett Hearn, Dale Planck and Alan Johnson have scored five victories apiece. Jeremiah Shingledecker owns four wins while Advance Series standouts Matt Sheppard and Gary Tomkins have both taken three checkered flags. Tour regulars Steve Paine, Jimmy Phelps and Frankie Caprara along with Central New York runner Steve Hulsizer and Lebanon Valley regulars Kenny Tremont and Ryan Larkin are the only other repeat winners. Advance Series travelers Justin Haers and Pat O’Brien are among 31 more drivers having reached victory lane once counting through the final weekend of July.

Shocking Results For Series Fast Qualifiers: For a third straight year, Integra Shocks will play an active role in point fund sponsorship of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series during the upcoming race season. The fast driver during 2008 Advance Auto Parts Series qualifying will once again earn the 'Integra Shocks Fast Time Award' and the driver winning the most Integra Shocks Fast Time awards during the season will collect a bonus set of four Integra Shocks ($1,400 value) at the DIRTcar Racing NorthEast Banquet in November. The Advance Auto Parts Series has recognized fast time trialers since 1983, with 1999 marking the first year the awards program included every tour event scheduled during the year. All-time Advance Series race winner Brett Hearn is also a leader when it comes to speed, earning a series-best total of 38 Integra Shocks Fast Time awards during the past two decades.

Drivers will continue to draw for their order in the 'Integra Shocks Time Trials’ at nearly every Advance Series stop, with the fast timer once again selecting a second pill to determine how many cars (0, 2, 3 or 4) will be inverted to start each preliminary heat race. The 'Integra Shocks Fast Time Award' winner will collect $100 and five (5) bonus points and the top-three heat race finishers will earn additional bonus points as follows: 1st-5 pts, 2nd-3 pts, 3rd-1 pt. With this inversion format in place, a driver can now earn a maximum of 10 more points being the fast timer as well as a heat race winner.

Previous OCFS Series Fast Timers: 2007 – Brett Hearn (21.785 sec.) on Oct. 21, Billy Decker (21.522) on May 31; 2006 – Rick Mill (21.789) on Oct. 22, Billy Decker (21.697) on July 13; 2004 – Matt Sheppard (21.878) on Oct. 24, Frank Cozze (22.537) on June 10; 2003 – Brett Hearn (21.345) on Oct. 26, Steve Paine (21.970) on June 5; 2002 – Brett Hearn (21.932) on Oct. 27, Brett Hearn (21.772) on Aug. 1; 2001 – Tim McCreadie (22.079) on Oct. 21, Brett Hearn (21.849) on June 14; 2000 – Chuck Bower (22.557) on Oct. 22, Steve Paine (21.693) on Aug. 16; 1999 – Andy Bachetti (22.793) on Oct. 24; 1998 – Chuck McKee (23.533) on Oct. 25; 1997 – Kenny Brightbill (22.161) on Oct. 26; 1996 – Jeff Heotzler (22.541) on Oct. 27; 1995 – Brett Hearn (21.829) on Oct. 22; 1994 – Brett Hearn (22.682) on Oct. 21; 1993 - Bob McCreadie (22.025) on Oct. 24; 1992 – Brett Hearn on Oct. 25; 1991 – Brett Hearn on Oct. 27; 1990 – Bob McCreadie (21.875) on Oct. 21; 1989 – Brett Hearn (22.710, heat) on Oct. 22; 1988 – Rich Eurich (22.700, heat) on Oct. 23; 1987 – Billy Pauch (22.393) on Oct. 25; 1986 – Brett Hearn (22.907) on Oct. 26; 1985 – Anthony Ferraiuolo IV on Oct. 27; 1984 – Jack Johnson (22.620) on Oct. 28; 1983 – Rich Eurich (23.294) on Oct. 30.

Grand Slam Showcases Series: The customary pre-race re-draw among top heat race qualifiers will continue to be in effect throughout the summer, with season-ending events at the New York State Fairgrounds and Orange County Fair Speedway the only Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series stops awarding fast timers with pole-position starts (heat points will not be awarded at these shows). Lebanon Valley Speedway and Rolling Wheels Raceway Park host the initial “200s” to make up the high-dollar Advance Series ‘Grand Slam’ in 2008.

Continuing to rank among the most prestigious races in the country, the Rite Aid 200 at the N.Y.S. Fairgrounds in Syracuse on Oct. 12, Eastern States 200 at Orange County on Oct. 19, Coors National 200 at Lebanon Valley on Sept. 6 and World Series Weekend 200 at Rolling Wheels on Sept. 27 are the only 200-lap races on the annual tour. In 2008 these four signature events on the Advance Auto Parts Series formulate the prestigious ‘Grand Slam’ in DIRTcar Racing for Big-Block Modifieds. In addition, the Rite Aid 200 winner automatically earns seventh-place on the Eastern States 200 starting grid.

This unique ‘Grand Slam’ features the $50,000-to-win Rite Aid 200 in the Salt City, $20,000-to-win Eastern States 200 in Middletown (NY), $10,000-to-win Coors National 200 at the West Lebanon (NY) oval with another $10-grand on the line for the Rolling Wheels National 200 winner. Syracuse and Orange County are the only Advance Auto Parts Series stops where the fast timers start on the pole and the top-six are locked into front three row starting positions while heats will be aligned in heads-up fashion. A special points system was implemented for these prominent races last season with each winner receiving 150 Series points and 50 points awarded to start.

Syracuse SDW Starters Guaranteed Through Series Success: Guaranteed starting berths in the Rite Aid 200 are once again up for grabs and in 2008 more drivers than ever before will be able to earn preferred starter status throughout the season for the richest DIRTcar Big-Block Modified event in the world. Winners of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series races and those among the top-12 in overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Modified Championship points heading into Super DIRT Week comprise the core group of drivers receiving guaranteed starting positions in the Rite Aid 200. Preferred starters are the next eligible drivers finishing behind an Advance Auto Parts Series race winner that is already locked into the Rite Aid 200 starting grid, as well as all three DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Regional point champions and every licensed Big-Block Modified track champion crowned this year.

In order to take advantage of their guaranteed starting positions in the Rite Aid 200, Advance Series race winners and top-12 Mr. DIRTcar point-getters must run time trials. Any guaranteed driver that fails to qualify through time trials or a Triple 20 will be added to the Rite Aid field in order of heat race results. Those drivers holding preferred status are afforded up front starting positions in the Dig Safely New York last-chance qualifier on Sunday, Oct. 12 if unable to qualify while running under the clocks or in heat race competition. The balance of the Rite Aid 200 line-up is filled in from the Dig Safely New York Shootout with the 45th starting spot going to the best overall finisher in Cayuga County Fair Speedway’s ‘Win & You’re In’ Twin 25s on Sat., Oct. 11.
