Super DIRT Week Returns To Moody Mile in ’08; Fair Increases Resources for Campers

Weedsport, NY – September 14, 2007 – By Dan Kapuscinski, DIRT NorthEast PR and Promotions Coordinator

Despite rumors that Super DIRT Week XXXVI would be the last at the New York State Fairgrounds, DIRTcar Northeast General Manager Jack Deery has made it a point to put those questions to rest.

“DIRT Week XXXVII will be at the Moody Mile in 2008,” Deery said. “We at DIRTcar have been in constant contact with NYSF Director Dan O’Hara and Assistant Director Matt Morgan and they have been absolutely super in working with us to make this year’s event and future events as successful as possible.”

Part of looking toward the future will be the implementation of a new ticket system for 2008. To accommodate the magnitude of Super DIRT Week, DIRTcar will make the move to internet purchasing for next season.

“We have a system that we are working on that should be in place toward the middle of this winter,” Deery said. “This way everyone can go to the internet to purchase their tickets. This is why we have not yet put tickets on sale for Super Dirt Week XXXVII to this point.”

Fans will however be able to pick up reservation forms for 2008 tickets at this year’s event, as a ticket kiosk will be set up on the speedway grounds.

The long time fan need not worry with the new internet system. Those with tickets for 2007 will have the right to renew their seats and camping spaces for 2008. As well, those without internet access will still receive their annual ticket renewals sent through standard mail.

Several questions have also been raised in regards to camping. Camping will be allowed for 2007, and in fact will be much improved through increased cooperation with the Fair.

“New Fair manager Dan O’Hara has really worked with us very well to help accommodate our fans,” Deery said. “Through our talks we have managed to open up an additional 100 campsites with power and utilities in the expanded Mid-Way lot off the backstretch.”

Several additional power outlets and water hook ups have also been added to non-reserved camping spaces.

One minor change has been made as far as pre-staged camping for this year. The upper lot along Route 690, which used to be the pre-staging area for camping, is being utilized by the Fair this fall. For 2007 those looking to enter the camping area will pre-stage in the lower lot directly adjacent to State Fair Blvd.

Those wishing to pre-stage for camping may enter the lower lot anytime after Noon on Sunday, Sept. 23. The lot features 200 camping hook ups as well as 24-hour restrooms and facilities.

“We wanted to open the lower lot on the 23rd to cater to those fans that will be in attendance for World Series Weekend at Rolling Wheels Raceway,” Deery said. “Now fans can leave Rolling Wheels on Sunday morning, and drop off their campers and supplies at the Fair before heading home.”

Those fans who do pre-stage will receive an entry number. Campers will then file into Gate 7 of the Fair at Noon on Tuesday, Oct. 2, which is a day earlier than last year to allow more time for camper set up.

Not only has State Fair management helped to improve camping, but one major change has been made to the Speedway itself.

The pit lane has been extended over 100 ft., which will add 2-3 ft. of space to each stall.

“This may not seem like much, but it is a huge improvement as far as safety is concerned,” Deery said. “The cars will now exit the pit lane using the cinder track off of turn 2, giving the drivers the whole back straight to get up to speed as opposed to diving back on in turn 1.”

Two other changes have been made, which come at the hands of New York State health regulations.

Unlike in the past, campfires will not be allowed on the ground. Fires must be kept in an above ground container. Fans can either use a unit purchased from a department store, or a simple barrel bottom supported by two bricks.

Secondly, there will be no pets of any kind allowed on State Fair property with the exception of service dogs. Any dogs or other pets seen on NYSF property will need to be removed.

One exciting alteration to this year’s schedule has been the addition of the Futures Race on Thursday, Oct. 4. These races are open to any driver that has not qualified for a main event during Super DIRT Week in their particular class.

A driver that has qualified for a Sportsman main but not a 358-Modified main would be considered a ‘Futures’ driver in the 358 division. However, a past 358 qualifier may not compete in the Sportsman division, even if they have never qualified for a Super DIRT Week main in the Sportsman class.

Frequently Asked Questions

To help Super DIRT Week attendees plan for the big event, staff members in the DIRTcar NorthEast office have tracked the numerous phone calls received and compiled a comprehensive list of the most frequently asked questions.  Here are the questions and the answers:

6. Can we have fireworks?
Fireworks are strictly prohibited on the New York State Fairgrounds.  Violators will be removed from the property.

7. I am camping.  Do I also need a parking permit?
If you have a separate vehicle from your camping unit, you will be required to purchase a parking permit for the vehicle.  Infield parking is $30 for the week.  General parking is $15.

8. Can we have scaffolding at our site?
Scaffolding is prohibited by NY State Fairgrounds regulations.

9. Where can I find Handicap parking?
Handicap Parking is located outside of turn 1 at the end of the grandstand.  You must display a valid Handicap Parking Permit to park in this area.

10. Can we meet the drivers?
A special autograph session with the top 30 qualified Modified drivers will take place under the grandstand on Sunday, October 8 at 11:45 AM.  Several vendors on Vendor Row will be hosting interviews with drivers, officials, and others associated with Super DIRT Week and DIRT racing.

11. Where can I take Lost and Found items?
The Fan Information Center will be located at the tunnel exit outside of turn 4.  Please bring Lost and Found items to this location.

12. What do we do if we have an emergency?
Stuff happens.  If you are having some problems, emergencies can be reported to any security officer, employee in a ‘staff’ or ‘official’ attire, at the Information Center, or by calling 315-487-8636.  Paging of spectators is not possible unless in case of emergency.

13. The schedules have changed.  How can I find out what is going on?
Communication at Super DIRT Week is greatly improved for 2007.  Information can be obtained at the Fan Information Center located at the tunnel exit outside of turn 4.  Schedules will be available in the Post Standard that is delivered to the Fairgrounds every day Wednesday through Sunday.  Event information will be broadcast on 100.1 FM.  Radio headsets are available for purchase at the DIRT Merchandise locations.  Limited Edition SDW XXXVI Collectible Programs are available for purchase at the DIRT Merchandise locations and the Program Kiosk.  Feel free to stop and ask any of our staff members of officials.  We are all happy to help answer your questions.

14. Can we hang banners and signs?
We love it if you bring banners and signs to cheer on your favorite driver(s).  Your signage must be in good taste and must not obstruct the view of your fellow fans. And remember, Super DIRT Week events will air on SPEED on Oct. 28 so make a sign you think might get you on TV.

15. We are bringing children.  Do we have any way to protect them from obnoxious fans?
Fans using abusive or profane language in the grandstand area or who are deemed intoxicated will be asked to leave the facility.  Please don’t hesitate to report any disturbances or offensive behavior at any location on the property to the closest uniformed employee or security staff.

16. We want to attend the events at Rolling Wheels Raceway and Cayuga County Fairgrounds, but we really don’t want to unhook from our RV or we just really don’t want to drive – is transportation available?
FREE bus transportation to Rolling Wheels Raceway and Cayuga County Fairgrounds is available on Friday and Saturday nights.  Buses will pick up and drop off passengers at Gate 11.  Contact the Fan Information Center for times and to reserve a seat.

17. How can we find out the scanner frequencies?
Frequency sheets are available at the Racing Electronics Trailers located on both on Manufacturers Row and Vendor Row.

18. Will church services be held on Sunday morning?
Finish Line Chaplain Pastor David Wells will be conducting services at the Gater Racing News location on Vendor Row Sunday morning, October 8 at 10:00 AM.

19. How can I be admitted to watch the pre-race inspection and Happy Hour on Wednesday?
