2009 Season Review: First-string driver for Doug Dulen in his final year of ownership, Tomkins salvaged sixth-place on the final ’09 overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Championship points chart with 11 Top-10 tour tallies and a handful of Top-5s to his credit; falling out of the top-five in points for just the second time in the past eight seasons. Retaining Canandaigua Speedway (2 wins) as his home track ---site of his best tour finish of 2nd--- the Clifton Springs, N.Y, chauffeur led two series races for 85 laps, including 49 in the Rite Aid 200 on the Syracuse Mile in October, notching three heat race victories along the way. Increasing his Canandaigua count to 45 checkered flags, the former track Sportsman champion ranks sixth all-time since scoring his first Big-Block win at the ‘Land of Legends’ in 1992.

Series History: After persevering through 17 years of short-track competition to register his first major DIRTcar Championship in 2004, Tomkins has been striving to recapture the potent combination ever since. The ‘Tomahawk’ finally arrived on the scene in convincing fashion in '02 after scoring his initial Super DIRTcar Series wins at Hagerstown (Md) Speedway and Rolling Wheels Raceway Park (NY). He posted four more tour triumphs in '03 and the next year reached the pinnacle of his trade teamed with Elaine James Motorsports by claiming DIRTcar Northeast's ultimate Big-Block prize --- the overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Modified Championship. Standing 11th on the all-time tour win list, Tomkins has recorded six of his 17 Series victories at Rolling Wheels, doubling up with wins at Hagerstown, Canandaigua, Can-Am and Cornwall on the list of eight tracks he has reached victory lane.

DIRTcar Racing Record: A diehard DIRTcar driver for over two decades, Tomkins made his first Big-Block Modified start in 1990 to set the stage for a successful career on both the Central New York circuit and in Super DIRTcar Series competition. He first partnered with Doug Dulen and former co-owner Bill Trout at the end of 1996, then joined forces with Jim Bechy to tackle the Series in 2004-05, before settling into the local track/tour routine with loyal team owner Dulen. Garnering track titles at Rolling Wheels (2) and Brewerton Speedway, his career count now stands at 80 first-place trophies which includes back-to-back season bests of 14 checkered flags collected in 2004 & ‘05.
Fun Fact: As soon as the trackside action concluded on the DIRTcar Racing Northeast circuit in ‘07, Tomkins loaded up his family and headed around the world seeking fame and fortune. The trip downunder paid big dividends as he contended at such faraway ovals as Brisbane Int’l Speedway and Parramatta City Raceway before taking his first checkered flag in Australia at Maryborough Speedway in the Roosters Cup title race.
